Biological digestion of lagoon sludge is an inexpensive alternative to dredging.
BACKGROUND
Sni-A-Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) treats approximately 3 MGD of wastewater for the City of Blue Springs, MO. The WWTP wastes its biosolids (sludge) into two lagoons that total 17 acres. The lagoons have never been dredged, so the sludge was an average age of about 5 years old. The lagoon contained approximately 1495 dry tons of sludge which measured 2 to 2.5 feet across the entire lagoon and contained 60 to 70% volatiles.
The WWTP does BIO3 bioaugmentation which makes it very efficient at sludge digestion plus the years of active endogenous bacteria in the lagoon would make it seem impossible to significantly reduce the sludge volume of the lagoons.
TREATMENT CONCEPT
BioAdd, LLC did BIO3 bioaugmentation treatment of the lagoon by the addition of large quantities of propriety facultative populations of microbes, enzymes and digestion aids over a three week period. WWTP personal stirred and mixed the sludge every other day during the treatment time.
RESULTS
After the treatment period plus two weeks (5 weeks) the sludge was measured at 1 to 1.5 feet across the entire lagoon.
SUMMARY
BIO3 treatment reduced lagoon sludge 40 to 50%.
